Wheat &Ragi Baby Food (6 months)

We normally try a variety of food recipes and food tastes. Babies have taste buds too. But babies consume very little food in their routine. So it is important to follow highly nutritious baby food diet.

Initially when you begin feeding babies solids, then the baby food recipes are very limited. This is because of the fear of allergy in babies. Baby puree recipes of fruits or vegetables are usually advised.




When do you feed baby food ?

Normally most parents begin baby food during 5th or 6th month. A slow and careful feeding of semi solid baby foods routine should be built up for the baby.

Grains - Healthy Food for Babies.

Baby food diet plan is a huge task and challenge. Babies need all the nutrients for their growth, but the digestion capacity is at its minimal. The grains make an excellent baby food 6 months.

There are a variety of healthy food recipes many parents follow. I have followed a homemade baby food made of Wheat, Green Gram and Ragi from the time he was 5 months old.

Preparing the Grains for Baby Food.

  • Wash wheat under running water. 
  • Drain the water completely and spread it all over a cotton cloth. 
  • Leave it spread for overnight. 
  • Next morning there would be still some amount of moisture in the wheat. 
  • Heat a thick bottomed pan and dry fry the wheat. 
  • Keep stirring for 5 minutes. 
  • And transfer it to an open container. 
  • Allow it to cool completely before storing in an air tight container.
Do the same for ragi and green gram too. Store them all separately.

Equal quantity of wheat, green gram and ragi is to be milled into a fine powder to make the baby food. If you are making powder at home yourself, then it is preferable to do the powdering of the grains in small batches.

Initially begin with wheat and ragi (exclude green gram) for your baby. When feeding baby his solid food becomes a routine and gets easy, you may introduce green gram and other grains too gradually.

Baby Food Recipe:

  • In a small bowl add 1 spoon (or more as required) baby food grain powder and half cup water. Whisk the powder in the water and make a lump free paste.
  • Take a clean sterilized vessel and add one cup of milk.
  • Add this paste to the vessel and let it boil in low flame. 
  • Keep stirring without any break till it thickens. 
  • Boil for 15 to 20 minutes.

Add water or milk or formula milk according to your choice and baby’s taste. You may add salt or any sweetening agent. You may also go for any of the vegetable or fruit purees.
